Growing up in Adelaide and then moving to the East Coast of Australia in my twenties for the next seventeen years, I returned to Adelaide as a mature woman and mother. I had to get settled back into the slower steadier rhythm that is Adelaide, and even though the first few years I tried to resist, eventually I came to appreciate that Adelaide builds wellbeing in people.

I enjoyed the lifestyle that Sydney provided, the fast pace, the constant activity, the never ending stream of things to do and places to go. Noosa on the other hand was quiet, up at 6am and asleep at 9.30pm. Beaches, surf and wild waves, sun, warmth, thongs and sarongs are my memories.

So from one extreme to the other, I landed back in Adelaide and had forgotten that this little city has so many great lifestyle benefits:

  1. Little stress. There has to be a very solid reason to be “stressed” in Adelaide. Adelaideans cannot relate to you if you act stressed, it is a behaviour that is quite out of place.
  2. No much traffic. There is really very little traffic to be concerned about, and you only need live on the East Coast for a while to appreciate this. If you complain about traffic in Adelaide, then you have not lived in a city where traffic is a real issue.
  3. Easy parking. You can park pretty much wherever you go. For example, I can find a park in the city on a footy night, seriously.
  4. Easy to access. Twenty minutes to most places in the metro area.
  5. It is flat. So you can bike and walk easily to work and the local shops.
  6. Small talk is OK. People are happy to have a chit chat about the weather or whatever. Even in business meetings it is quite acceptable to chit chat about the day and the weather before you get down to business.
  7. The beaches and the bush are accessible. Both stimulate good vibes and increase mental wellbeing and both are within half hour drive of most suburbs of Adelaide.
  8. Affordable housing. You can get into the housing marketing without mortgaging the next 100 years of your life. Rent is also much more reasonable than other cities in Australia. . t will always be cheaper in Adelaide to buy a house or to rent.
  9. Fresh produce is readily available. We have market gardeners in the CBD! Fresh produce, easily available, no excuses for not eating fresh food.
  10. The flat, stable, dry Adelaide Plains. The landscape of a city has a strong influence on the behaviours and attitudes of its population. The flatness of this city’s plains creates a stable vibe, a feeling of your feet on the ground and connected to the land. This is not be ignored, as it has a powerful influence over the way we think and feel in ourselves.
  11. Our beaches. We bathe in our beaches and float for relaxation. We don’t have to tackle waves, not good for surfers but perfect for bathers. We have our very own float tanks in the sea.
  12. We are discerning. Products, services and ideas are apparently tested here because we have great bullshit radars. This quality itself develops resilience and wellbeing.
  13. Supports an ageing population. We get to grow old in a city where it is easy to get around by foot, bike or scooter. There is no reason to leave the city behind for more relaxation, we have it right here.

The Big Oxmox advised her not to do so, because there were thousands of bad Commas, wild Question Marks and devious Semikoli, but the Little Blind Text didn’t listen. She packed her seven versalia, put her initial into the belt and made herself on the way.
